      中国文化人物（主编 王保胜）福建省诏安县地处闽粤交界，山川毓秀，地灵人杰，历代文人荟萃，文风炽盛。其书画之风始于唐代，盛于明清，形成独具风格的“诏安画派”，其影响波及日本、台湾和东南亚一带。现代诏安书坛画苑依然花繁叶茂，名家辈出，艺术氛围浓郁，处处丹青耀眼，家家翰墨飘香。1993年诏安县被文化部命名为“书画艺术之乡”。
      诏安的书画自明清以后，特别是到清代形成诏安画派，在福建广东一带乃至到台湾都是相当有影响的。中国美协的沈柔坚先生、沈福文先生、还有曾担任全国书协副会长的林林先生都是出自诏安，是国内知名度很高的学者专家。以谢樵、沈耀初为代表的诏安画派在台湾占有一席之地。
      诏安之所以被称为书画艺术之乡，不仅仅因为从这里走出了许多书画界名人，更重要的是书画艺术已经溶入到百姓的生活之中。在诏安无论是政府部门的办公室，还是饭店宾馆，甚至每家每户的墙壁上都挂着诏安人自己的书画作品。这种环境无疑也促进了书画艺术的发展，为后来诏安形成书画艺术之乡提供了厚实的基础和必要条件。
      沈冰山就诞生在这样一个空气中都弥漫着艺术气息的“中国书画之乡”。
      1934年，沈冰山出生在福建省诏安县一个商人之家。沈冰山的父亲有着深厚的艺术修养，尤其喜爱音乐和书画。同时他对子女的教育也很有想法，希望孩子们都能从小就受到良好艺术培养和教育。
      “我大哥沈锡纯刚刚四岁的时候，我父亲就请我们县的一个老画家来教我大哥学画画，后来还请一个古筝家来教他古筝。父亲是很重视培养下一代的艺术修养的。”哥哥大他２０多岁，能书会画，小时候他常常为哥哥磨墨、调色、铺纸。正是在这种散发着浓郁艺术气息的外部环境与家庭环境下，沈冰山六岁开始学习绘画艺术。
      但是，生活对沈冰山来说实在是过于残酷了。幼年丧父，勉强读完小学，就因家道中落辍学。1958年，沈冰山的双眼出现了病况。两年后，带着全部的希望，沈冰山到福州一家大医院医治眼睛，满心渴望自己的双眼能够通过这次手术而恢复健康。但是他等来的却是噩耗：手术失败。他的双眼永远的失去了光明，这个世界从此将在他的生命中成为永恒的黑暗。
      沈冰山沉默了。那一年，他才仅仅26岁，正是一个风华正茂的好年华。一夜无眠，此时的白天黑夜对沈冰山来说已经没有分别。
      倔强的沈冰山不肯就此向命运低头，他要将自己的命运掌握在自己的手中。他要做一个有用的人。一个对人类有所贡献的人。一个能够名留青史的人。
      在亲友的关怀、鼓励下，沈冰山决心与命运抗争。他婉拒了亲人为他设计的或算命，或行医的前程规划，而是向他的老师沈庆生学棋局，并进步神速。他以耳代眼，临阵不乱，能同时与三四人对弈，而屡操胜券。十多年后，沈冰山一举夺得诏安县象棋赛冠军。此后多次在省市级象棋比赛中战胜明眼人夺冠。1993年还在全国盲人象棋比赛中获亚军。他的象棋对局和排局创作被《中国象棋报》等报刊选登20多局。
      在学象棋的同时，沈冰山又学扬琴演奏。1994年，他与他人合奏的《蛟龙吐珠》获全国残疾人音乐录音比赛团体二等奖。此外，他创作的民乐合奏曲《校园晨曲》获福建省乐曲创作比赛二等奖。
      沈冰山不满足于棋琴方面所取得的成就，经过反复思考，沈冰山向家人和朋友宣布了一件重要事情：他要重新拿起画笔画画儿，他要当画家。他的目标是“要    填补中国美术史和历史上没有盲人画家的空白”。
      绘画，自古以来就是视觉艺术，是站在艺术殿堂顶端的艺术之花，即使是明人眼，历史上能够取得辉煌成就的名家也是寥寥无几，何况一个双目失明的人？
      面对家人的不解和担忧，沈冰山平静的解释道：左丘明目盲仍著《左传》，阿炳瞎了却奏“二泉映月”。我喜欢书画艺术，从小受家庭的影响，受父亲的教导，老师的培养，为什么我不能在书画艺术上有所作为，让自己的生命更有意义呢？我不但要绘画，我还要在历史和美术史上留下自己的足迹。用自己的成就，做第一个盲人画家，来填补艺术史和美术史上的空白。如果一个人的健康可以打100分，失去了眼睛，我至少还有60分。我还可以做许多事情。一个人没有眼睛不可怕，可怕的是没有信心和乐观向上的人生态度，可怕的是没有人生的远大理想和追求。
      沈冰山要勇闯古往今来盲者无法涉足的书画园地！这不仅要有非凡的胆识，更要具备非凡的智力和毅力。从此，沈冰山开始研习“书画”，并作为实现人生价值的一项工程，在名师佳朋的帮助下努力攀登。
 
      Fu Jian province Zhaoan county is located in the junction of Guang Dong and Fu Jian. It has beautiful scenery; it is a remarkable place where produces outstanding people; it has ancient literati and a flourishing writing style. The painting wind began in the Tang Dynasty, flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasty, and formed to be a unique style of “Zhaoan School”, its influence spread to Japan, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. At present, Zhaoan gallery of calligraphy painting still has flourish leaves and flowers, has many famous masters, and the art atmosphere is very strong, it has painting everywhere, every house has ink fragrance. In 1993, Zhaoan county was named the “hometown of painting and calligraphy” by the Ministry of culture.
      Zhaoan painting since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, especially in the Qing Dynasty formed to be Zhaoan School, and it was quite influential in Fu Jian and Guang Dong province even in Taiwan. Number of Chinese Artists Association Mr. Shen Roujian, Mr. Shen Fuwen, and the former vice president of the National Calligraphy Association Mr. Lin Lin, all of them were famous experts and scholars in China, all were come from Zhaoan. The Zhaoan School represented by Xie Qiao and Shen Yaochu occupies a space in Taiwan.
      Zhaoan is known as the hometown of painting and calligraphy, not only because it has produced many paintings and calligraphy celebrities, the more important thing is the calligraphy and painting art has been integrated into people’s lives. In Zhaoan, no matter in a government office or a hotel, even on the wall of every house are hung the Zhaoan natives’ works. This kind of environment no doubt promoted the development of painting art and provided a solid foundation and necessary condition for the later formation of Zhaoan to be hometown of painting and calligraphy.
      Shen Bingshan was born in such a “Chinese hometown of painting and calligraphy” where the air is filled with artistic atmosphere.
      In 1934, Shen Bingshan was born in a merchant’s family of Zhaoan county Fu Jian province. Shen Bingshan’s father had prodound artistic accomplishment, particularly in fond of music and painting. At the same time he had many ideas towards children’s education. He hoped his children can had a good art training and education from childhood.
      “When my older brother Shen Xichun was four year’s old, my father asked a old painter of our county to teach my brother to paint, then he also asked a Gu Zheng master to teach him play Gu Zheng. My father was very serious for the next generation’s artistic accomplishment training.” My brother is 20 years older then me, he can write and paint. When I was young I often helped my brother to make ink, match color and spread the paper. It is exactly in this external environment and family environment which send out rich artistic atmosphere, Shen Bingshan started to learn the art of painting at the age of six.
      But, life is too cruel for Shen Bingshan. He lost his father when he was young, and stopped school just after he finished primary school because of the falling of his family. in 1958, Shen Bingshan’s eyes had illness. Two years later, with all the hope, Shen Bingshan came to a big hospital to cure his eyes. He filled with hope to recovery through the operation. But what he waited for is bad news: the operation failed, his eyes lost sight forever. This world became eternal dark in his life.
      Shen Bingshan kept silent. That year, he was 26 years old. It is a prime time. He spent a sleepless night, at that time the day and night had no difference to him.
      The stubborn Shen Bingshan refused to bow to fate. He wanted to control his fate in his own hands. He determined to be a useful person, a person who made contribution to the human and who can left name in the history book.
      With the encouragement of his relatives and friends, Shen Bingshan determined to struggle with destiny. He politely refused his relatives’ plan for his future, which was to be a fortune teller or a doctor. Shen Bingshan studied chess from his teacher Shen Qingsheng, and made progress very fast. He used his ears instead of his eyes, and face to the battle peacefully. He can play chess with three or four people at the same time and win the game. After more than 10 years, he won the chess championship of Zhaoan County. Then he won the bright eyes many times at provincial and municipal chess compete. In 1993, he won the second prize in the national blind man’s chess compete. More than 20 chessboards of his chess skills and compositions were published in “Chinese Chess” and other journals.
      In the same time when learning chess, Shen Bingshan also learnt dulcimer. in 1994, he with other together played “dragon play with pearl” won the group second prize of the national disabled music recording competition. In addition, the folk music ensemble “school morning song” he created won the second prize of musical creation competition of Fu Jian province.
      Shen Bingshan wasn t satisfied with his achievement of chess and musical instrument. Through repeated reflection, he announced one important thing to his family and his friends: he will pick up the painting brush again. He wants to be a painter. His aim is “to fill the bland of no blind painter in Chinese art history.”
      Painting, since the ancient time it is the visual art, it is the flower standing in the palace of the art. Even the bring eyes, there were few people in history had achieved brilliant success, much less for a blind man?
      Face to family number’s incomprehension and worry, Shen Bingshan explained calmly “Zuo Qiuming was blind but still written Zuo Zhuan, A Bing was blind but sting can play “Moonnight on two springs”. I love painting and calligraphy art, since childhood I influenced by the family, my father’s teaching and teacher’s training, why can’t I achieve something in art and make my life more meaningful? I will not only paint, but also will leave my footprints in history and art history. With my own achievements, to be the first blind painter, the fill the blank of the cultural history and art history. If a healthy person’s score is 100, I at least have 60 points left. I can do many things. It is not terrible for a person to lose his eyes, the real terrible thing is the lack of confidence and optimistic attitude toward life, it is don’t have lofty ideals of life and the pursuit of it.
      Shen Bingshan wants to challenge the painting garden which no blind man can enter from the ancient to modern times. This will not only have extraordinary courage and insight, but also have extraordinary intelligence and perseverance. Since then, Shen Bingshan began studying  calligraphy and painting , and made it as a project of realizing the value of life, with the help of best teachers and friends, he endeavored to climb.
