Now a professor of CAFA where he also serves as doctoral supervisor and adviser to academic committee; also the honorary president of Chinese Oil Painting Society, adviser to Chinese Artists Association, visiting member of European Academy of Arts and Humanities, academic advisor to the Academy of Chinese Oil Painting of Chinese National Academy of Arts.
In the 20 plus years of acting as the academic leader for national oil painting, the organizer and leader in the field of Chinese oil painting art, he led and presided over many national exhibitions, exchanges, and research activities on oil painting art, and headed the selection and award of oil paintings in major art exhibitions. The National Fine Arts Exhibition held every five years saw him serve as member of the appraisal committee, leader of the oil painting appraisal group, and member of the general award appraisal committee, in its sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth sessions. As organizer and host of the first, second and third "Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition", he has made outstanding contribution to the development of Chinese oil painting art in the new period.
Engaged in oil painting teaching and creation for decades, he has endowed his oil paintings with such features as solid shape, rigorous structure, concise technique, free and easy brushing, strong color, refreshing and bold style, and rich sense of poetry and music. His representative works include Five Heroes of Langya Mountain, Song of the Plateau, and Tide. He published the Collection of Zhan Jianjun's Paintings. His works are collected by the National Art Museum of China, the National Museum (formerly the Museum of Chinese Revolutionary History), and Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution.

Since 1958, his oil paintings have been exhibited in national fine arts exhibitions, and many of his historical paintings have been collected by the Museum of Chinese Revolutionary History. After 1980, as the director and professor of the first studio of the oil painting department of CAFA, he trained many talents with his rich experience, while producing plenty of portraits of extensive social impact, and being rated by critics as the representative painter of contemporary Chinese oil painting. In the early 1980s, he was invited to lecture at the Department of Oriental Art at the City University of New York, and conducted research during his visits to the art museums in the United States and Europe. After the 1980s, he combined traditional Chinese aesthetic concepts with classical European oil painting techniques in creation, and developed a distinct personal style. Many of his works become collection in the National Art Museum of China, and he has published many collections of paintings. His works, like Tajik Bride, Young Singer, Qu Qiubai, Portrait of a Doctor, Painter, and Huang Binhong in His Later Years, have become the representative of Chinese contemporary oil painting and spread far and wide.

His representative works include: Chinese paintings Wise Man of the Century, Qu Yuan and Songs of Chu, This Life and the Next Life, Great Wall, Starfire, Symphony of Heroism, Distant Hill, and Pleasure; comic series like Shen Xiaoxia Meeting the Northern Expedition Memorial, Shanghai Morning. His works were selected for the 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th national art exhibition and a large number of art works exhibition. Author of more than one million words of treatises, reviews and textbooks, he has published more than 10 kinds of picture albums, albums, monographs and teaching materials.

He is the editor-in-chief of World Art History, Series on World Higher Education of Art and China Contemporary Art: 1979-2010. Su Shishu loved calligraphy and seal cutting when he was young. He was taught by Mr. Liu Boqin and then by Mr. Qigong when he was young and middle-aged. He is engaged in the creation and research of calligraphy and seal cutting, as well as the research of Han Dynasty painting bricks, stones, and ancient inscriptions and rubbings. He can write in all styles of Calligraphy and good at seal script and clerical script with chicken brush, which forms his own characteristic. His hand writing is smooth and full of charm. His seal carving follows Qin and Han styles, expressing personality in the ancient style.
He is the editor-in-chief of Calligraphy Series, The Art of Chinese Calligraphy, Complete Collection of Chinese Calligraphy, Grand View of Fine Calligraphic Works by Ancient Masters etc. In recent years, in order to promote traditional Chinese culture and nurture teenagers and young people, Su Shishu has repeatedly submitted proposals to promote Chinese character culture and calligraphy education during the NPC and CPPCC sessions
In 2009, he delivered a speech on Chinese Writing Education for Teenagers Calls for Strengthening Urgently on behalf of Calligraphy and Painting Office of CPPCC at the Third Plenary Session of the Second Session during 11th CPPCC National Committee. He has participated in contemporary ceramic art exhibitions at home and abroad for many times, and has won more than forty awards. He won the “Art and Cultural Heritage Award” of the Ministry of Culture in 2012 and the “Chinese Art and Culture Award” of China Academy of Arts in 2013. He has held individual ceramic exhibitions in China, Singapore, South Korea, the United States, France, Germany and other countries. He has made great efforts for these years to promote the creation of contemporary ceramic art with Chinese philosophical connotation, especially in the creation of contemporary environmental ceramic art. Many large-scale ceramic works are placed in the important buildings and public spaces of Seoul and Jeju Island in South Korea, Shanghai, Tianjin and Jiujiang in China, and become one of the important cultural landscapes of the city.

He studied modern heavy color in 1994 under the guidance of Professor Du Dakai of the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts (now Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University). He was admitted to the Master’s class of the Mural Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2000, specializing in mural art.
